Highlights of this tour
- The Doge’s palace
- St Mark’s basilica
Your San Marco and Doge’s Palace walking/rolling tour starts from the moment you meet your private guide at the San Marco square. This tour avoids steep paths, and the bridges without ramps, which makes it accessible for wheelchair or scooter users, or for travelers with reduced mobility.
We can arrange pick up from the cruise port by a tourist assistant, at an additional cost. She will guide you to San Marco square, where you meet your officially licensed guide for your private tour. At the end of the trip, your tourist assistant will help you make your way back to the cruise terminal again.
During this private tour, your guide will share all the secrets about this mesmerizing city. With her you visit the famous San Marco cathedral, near the San Marco Square, or referred to in Italian: Piazza San Marco. Since this is the lowest point in Venice, it often floods when the Adriatic Sea level rises. A phenomenon that usually happens during the winter and spring.
You enter the cathedral on the backside by means of ramps. Prepare to be amazed by the beauty of this majestic building. You visit the Madonna Nicopeia chapel, ramped entry, and you can use the elevator on request. The elevator brings you to “quadriga,” the four copper horses during the Fourth Crusade. The interior is mostly gold-colored. Therefore the locals gave it the nickname: “Chiesa d’Oro,” or Golden Church.
This day you will not miss the various typical gondolas, making their way through the narrow water passages. The second highlight of this day is the visit of the Doge’s palace.
The Doge was the most important magistrate and leader of Venice. He was chosen for life by the nobility of the city. Usually, the selected Doge was the smartest and the oldest in Venice. Be impressed by the architecture, and experience the beautiful artworks in this palace.
The only part that is not completely step-free is the bridge connecting to the new prisons. The elevator works on request, and at the Doge’s apartments you find several temporary exhibitions. Enjoy the paintings, sculptures, and the enormous marble facade made by the artists Titian, Tintoretto, and Bellini.
After you have learned everything there is to know about these magical places, your guide will bring you back to San Marco square.
