Old Venetian Harbor and lighthouse

Rethymno has a history that goes back to ancient times. It was not such an important city then. That only happened thousands of years later, when the Venetians had the power on the island of Crete. They created a harbor in Rethymno that can still be admired. In the past, mainly transshipment of goods took place at the harbor. Now there are mostly taverns where tourists enjoy snacks or drinks. In addition to the relatively small Venetian port, a larger port has been added where all logistical activities are taking place as necessary.

The lighthouse stands on the pier. This Egyptian tower dates from 1830. Besides the lighthouse, there are dozens of fishing boats in the harbor. The larger ships and ferries moor at the new larger port to the east, so the Venetian harbor keeps its picturesque image.

Fortezza

The Fortezza of Rethymno dates from 1590. The entire fort was finally finished then. Worth seeing here are the bastion of St. Nicholas, the beautiful gate of the main entrance, and the temple of the Sultan Ibrahim with the Aspis of Michrab and the minaret. The residence of the rector and a part of the prison, to the east of this residence, also remained reasonably intact.

Historical & Folklore museum

The historical and folklore museum exhibits items of traditional handcraft and folk art. The museum is housed in a beautiful mansion in Venetian style, which you also see as part of the collection. They strive to become a knowledge -, research – and educational center to preserve the Cretan culture.

Rimondi Fountain

The Rimondi Fountain is said to be one of the most beautiful and elegant monumental fountains on the island of Crete. The city’s rector A. Rimondi built this fountain in 1626. It took care of a part of the water needs of the inhabitants of the city during the Venetian era. Back then, the center of the city was the Platanou square, where the fountain is situated. ‘The Great Fountain’ exists of three lion heads where the water exits into three water basins. To this day, water still runs through the same water basins.

Archeological Museum of Rethymno

Rethymnon has an archaeological museum. The rather small museum has a collection of archaeological finds that are mainly found near Rethymno and represent all the periods that were of great importance for Rethymno. Among other things, these finds are exhibited at the museum: a figurine of a Minoan goddess, a marble statue of Venus. The violin-shaped marble idol can be found in the cave of Gerani and a head of a terracotta female figurine.

Keep in mind that your driver guide can not access or tour any of the archaeological sites by local law. If you wish a guide to accompany you to tour inside the sites or museums, please let us know when booking this tour.
