Experience Roman times in Arles! The town is located in the Rhone delta and is the largest municipality in France. It is so significant because there are three large nature reserves that fall within the municipal boundaries: the Alpilles in the north, the Crau in the east, and part of the Camargue in the south. The city became famous because a painter lived there for a few years and made many of his paintings that later became legendary. Arles has much more to offer, though. It has a long and rich history, and to this day, there is still a lot to admire from ancient times. Come and discover them together with us.
The part of the Provence where you find Arles was occupied during Roman times. Emperor Constantine I loved the city so much that he named the city the capital of the Western Roman Empire in the year 408. You can see that Arles was a famous city, because of all the Roman traces that you will admire. All of which are now UNESCO World Heritage.
Arles is not only popular for all the Roman artifacts. A famous painter also left his mark. Vincent van Gogh came to Arles in February 1888 and was immediately drawn to the light. The different ways things catch light in Arles can still be admired in many of his paintings. Throughout the tour, you get to discover the best from both worlds. Look for illumination as van Gogh did and marvel at the glorious Roman artifacts.
After your stroll, there is time for lunch (not included in the price). Your guide will tell you where to go. Once lunch is over, you head to the Saint-Michel olive mill. This family-owned mill, located at the foothill of the Alps, is around since 1744 and is known for the best olive oil in the region. They will explain the different techniques they use to press the olives, and let you taste some.
Please note that the olive oil tasting needs to be booked in advance and paid on the day €10 per person.
Once the tour is finished, your guide brings you back to the port.
