Discover Haugesund, a coastal town strongly connected to the “gifts of the sea” with a rich history. Located in Fjord Norway, its success began in the 19th century with the herring fishing and ship building industry. Today, you can still see signs of this past, and the sea is still an important part of life here.
Haugesund is well-known for its lively cultural life. The city hosts many festivals and events throughout the year, including Sildajazz and the Norwegian International Film Festival. Along the waterfront, where you can enjoy the fresh sea air, you find hotels, cafés, restaurants, and bars.
This combined walking/rolling/transport tour is a great introduction to Haugesund and its surrounding area, showing how the past and present come together. Your journey sets off at your cruise port or accommodation in the city center, where you are picked up with a private adapted vehicle.
Your driver and guide will take you through the central parts of Haugesund town, allowing you to take in the architectural variety, culture, history, and Viking stories—all from the comfort of your private adapted vehicle. During this drive you will also pass the famous pastel pink Town Hall of Haugesund. This building was officially opened in 1931 and was a gift from a local ship owner and his wife. Haugesund Town Hall was voted Norway’s most beautiful town hall in 2010.
Besides the famous Pink Town Hall, this tour also allows you to see the statues of celebrities. The remarkable statue of Marilyn Monroe is located along the waterfront and was unveiled in 2009 as a tribute to the Norwegian International Film Festival. In contrast, the statue of King Harald I Fairhair honors the Viking king who unified Norway. Together, these statues reflect both Haugesund’s modern cultural life and its deep historical roots.
Your tour continues towards Haraldshaugen. This monument was constructed in 1872 to memorialize the Battle of Hafrsfjord and celebrate the 1,000 years of Norway’s unification. During this battle, King Harald Fairhair gathered 29 historic countries into the one kingdom of Norway.
This obelisk of 17 meters (approximately 56 feet) high is believed to be built on the site where King Harald Fairhair is buried. The 29 smaller stones surrounding the obelisk represent the old Norwegian countries.
Accessibility note: The surroundings of this monument are wheelchair accessible. However, to reach the actual base of the obelisk, please note that there are 31 stone steps.
Your next stop is the Steinsfjellet viewpoint, a popular local spot and a scenic gateway for strolls in nature. This viewpoint, which is located at 227 meters (approximately 745 feet) above sea level, offers gorgeous panoramic views over Haugesund and its surrounding landscape such as the North Sea and the different neighboring islands.
Please note if you choose to step off the coach at Steinsfjellet: although the path is asphalted, there may be some uneven ground.
At the end of the tour, your driver and guide bring you back to the cruise port or your city center accommodation.
