About this wheelchair accessible walking tour Santa Maria del Popolo & Spanish Steps – Rome

Your private walking/rolling tour starts at a pre-set location in the city center of Rome. Here you meet your officially licensed guide. From there together you continue towards Piazza del Popolo. Piazza del Popolo is a huge round 18th-century square, with the Egyptian obelisk in the middle of the square.

Furthermore, in the north part of the square, you see the old church Santa Maria del Popolo with its peculiar Caravaggio’s paintings. The wheelchair accessible entrance of the church is located on the right. Next to the church, you find Porta del Popolo, the northern city gate of the Aurelian city wall.

Spanish Steps

Your next stop is the Spanish Steps at Piazza di Spagna. The Spanish Steps are a popular place where visitors can admire the beautiful architecture, relax, and the perfect spot for people watching. Around the square, you find several shops and plenty of artists at the top of the stairs. The staircase is the connection between Piazza di Spagna at the bottom and Piazza Trinita Dei Monti at the top.

Trevi Fountain

No tour is complete without the famous Trevi Fountain. It is the largest and most visited fountain in the city. The fountain was built at the order of Pope Clemens XII in 1762 and is located on a small square, Piazza di Trevi, built against the back façade of the Palazzo Poli. The fountain symbolizes the two faces of the sea. The construction represents sea god Oceanus on a shell-shaped chariot, pulled by a calm and a wild horse, and young sea gods (tritons).

Many tourists throw (lucky) coins into the water, and we suggest you do it too! If you throw one coin, you will return to Rome, if you throw two coins, you will fall in love (with an Italian), and if you throw three coins you will marry your lover. But it only works if you throw the coins with your right hand over your left shoulder. And, that’s not all, once a year, all the coins are taken out of the water, and the proceeds go to charity.

Piazza Colonna and Piazza di Pietra

On the way to your last stop, the Pantheon, we walk/roll by Piazza Colonna and Piazza di Pietra. Piazza Colonna is known for the column of Marcus Aurelius that stands here since ancient times. Piazza di Pietra was an ancient Hadrian’s 2nd-century temple, however now houses the Stock market of Rome.

Your last stop is the Pantheon, located in front of Piazza della Rotonda.

At the end of the tour, your guide can advise a place for a drink or lunch. We can arrange private adapted transport to take you back to your accommodation.

Extend (1 hour)

To maximize this walking tour, it is possible to extend it with one hour and include a visit to the church of Saint Louis of France with its Caravaggio’s paintings. As well as a visit to the famous baroque Piazza Navona, including Fontana Dei Quattro Fiumi (the four Rivers Fountain).
