About this Wheelchair Accessible Athens Food Tour

Athens has a food culture that goes back thousands of years. On this private wheelchair accessible Athens food tour, you get to taste the best of it.
Your adapted vehicle picks you up from your accommodation and takes you straight to the Varvakios Agora, the city’s legendary central market.
Together with you guide, you walk and roll through Psyrri, Monastiraki and the edges of Plaka. during the tour, you stop a various local stops to try the local cuisine, meanwhile your guide shares the ins and outs about these local dishes

Varvakios Market

Built in 1886, the Varvakios Agora is named after the Greek national hero Ioannis Varvakis. It is the beating heart of Athenian food culture. Locals, chefs and restaurant owners have been coming here for their daily supplies for generations. The market is divided into several sections: the covered meat and fish halls on Athinas Street, and the open-air fruit, vegetable and spice stalls across the road on Evripidou Street.

Together with your private guide, you visit 3 to 4 local shops for a tasting. Depending on the day, you can expect to sample Greek cheeses, cold meats, gyros, loukoumades and spanakopita. You will also try snacks and local drinks such as ouzo, wine or tsipouro.

If you have any dietary restrictions or allergies, please let us know when booking the tour so we can accommodate your needs.

Accessibility Information

The market is on flat ground throughout; however, the covered fish hall has floors that are frequently wet from the ice used to keep the fish fresh. Closed-toe shoes with grip are strongly recommended for everyone. For manual wheelchair users, the guide is always happy to assist.

The market shops are open from 08:00 AM to approximately 16:00 PM, Monday to Saturday. The Varvakios Market can get very crowded, especially between 10:00 AM and 13:00 PM. We recommend visiting during quieter hours for a more enjoyable experience.

The prices of the food tasting are not included in the tour, and are to be paid on the day. The cost of the food is estimated to be 35 euro per person.

Psyrri Athens Most Accessible Neighbourhood

After the market, you continue to Psyrri, the lively neighbourhood that sits right next to the Varvakios Agora. Once considered a rough part of the town, Psyrri has reinvented itself over the past few decades. Today it is one of Athens most vibrant and creative areas full of tavernas, street art, small galleries and independent shops. It is also one of the most accessible neighbourhoods in central Athens.

The streets here are largely flat and many have been pedestrianized. That makes Psyrri a comfortable area for all mobility users to explore. There are no significant gradients, and the surfaces are generally paved and even.

Monastiraki

The final part of the tour takes you through two of Athens’ most beloved neighborhoods. Monastiraki and Plaka sit right at the foot of the Acropolis, and together they give you a strong sense of what makes this city so special.

Monastiraki is lively, colourful and full of character. The square is spacious and open, with flea market stalls, street vendors and café terraces spilling out in every direction. From here, you look straight up to the Acropolis and across to the Ancient Agora one of the great views in Athens. The area around the square is flat and paved, making it easy to walk and roll through at your own pace.

Plaka

Plaka is the oldest neighbourhood in Athens and one of the most charming. Its main streets are pedestrianized, lined with bougainvillea, tavernas and small shops, and largely flat and car-free. Some of the upper side streets have cobblestones or steps, but your guide knows this part of the city well and always takes the most accessible route through the neighbourhood.

At the end of the day, your driver will meet you to take you back to your accommodation or hotel, with a full stomach and a deeper understanding of Athens rich food culture.
