About this Wheelchair Accessible Tour of Neuschwanstein Castle

Your English-speaking driver will pick you up in front of your hotel in Munich with a private adapted vehicle. During the panoramic drive from Munich to Neuschwanstein Castle, which takes approx. 2 hours, your driver will share insights about the country, your surroundings, local traditions, the life of King Ludwig II and the history of Bavaria.

Neuschwanstein Castle

Upon arrival, you can see Neuschwanstein Castle’s famous dreamy towers, its high location in the Bavarian Alps, and storybook design. Fun fact! It even inspired the design of Disney’s Sleeping Beauty Castle! Neuschwanstein was built by King Ludwig II of Bavaria, often called the “Mad King.” In fact, he created the castle as a private fantasy retreat, and his mysterious life and early death add intrigue to every room you visit.

Arriving at Neuschwanstein Castle

Enjoy the breathtaking panoramic views of the Bavarian Alps. Your driver will collect your pre-reserved tickets for entry to the castle and the elevator for guests with reduced mobility. You will then be accompanied to the accessible shuttle bus, which brings you closer to the castle.

Alternatively, you can choose to take a horse carriage rather than the bus. However, the carriages do not have ramps. Visitors must be able to board independently or with the assistance of companions. Any regular-sized, foldable wheelchair can be stowed in the carriages.

Accessibility note: the shuttle bus is accessible via fold-out ramp. Inside the bus, your wheelchair will not be tied down.

Since Neuschwanstein Castle is located in the Alps, weather conditions can vary. Therefore, in autumn or winter, there may be days when the shuttle bus does not operate due to snowfall or mudslides, at discretion of the site.

The alternative to the bus or carriage is to walk/roll to the castle entrance via a paved pedestrian path, which takes approx. 45 minutes in total. Please be aware that this path upwards to the castle can be very steep in some sections and is not always smooth.

From the horse carriage or the bus shuttle drop-off point, there is an additional 15-minute walk/roll to the castle entrance. Along the way, you can take some time for photo opportunities, a stop at an accessible restroom, and if time allows it, grab a coffee.

Accessibility note: the path to the castle is uphill and steep. If you use a manual chair, we strongly recommend you take a companion with you that can help you with the climb, as this walk/roll may be physically demanding. Please prepare accordingly.

Entering Neuschwanstein Castle

Your driver will ensure that castle staff required to assist with elevator access are present and will hand your party over to the official castle guide. Please note that, due to site regulations, only guides directly associated with Neuschwanstein Castle may conduct tours inside the castle and that you will thus join the local tour group.

Inside the Castle

The guided tour inside the castle focusses mainly on the third and fourth floor of the castle, where the stories of Ludwig and his fantasy-like vision come to life.

On the third floor, one of the highlights is the famous Throne Hall with massive columns, mosaics, and a domed ceiling. Interestingly, this room also extends to the fourth floor. In addition, the third floor includes the king’s bedroom, dressing room and even a private chapel.

Moving on to the fourth floor, you’ll witness more of King Ludwig’s imagination and love for opera. There, you will find the Upper Hall, as well as the Singers’ Hall, inspired by medieval banqueting halls and Wagner’s operas.

After the inside tour of Neuschwanstein Castle, the driver will be waiting for you at the castle exit.

Ettal Abbey

On your return journey to Munich, you will stop at Ettal Abbey, a renowned Benedictine monastery located en route. It was founded in 1330 by Emperor Ludwig the Bavarian, following his coronation in Rome. However, after a fire in 1744, the abbey was rebuilt in an impressive Baroque style. It is renowned for its remarkable frescoes and distinctive circular church interior.

The abbey has smooth, accessible paths to the entrance, the basilica, and surrounding grounds, making it suitable for visitors using mobility aids.

Bavarian Monastery Cuisine

During your visit, you may choose to taste the rich dishes from Bavarian monastery cuisine or have a freshly tapped monastery beer while taking in the peaceful surroundings. Any food and drinks are not included, and can be paid directly on the day.

At the end of your tour, your driver brings you back to your hotel in Munich.
