This guide aims to provide you with practical information on visiting Topkapi Palace with a wheelchair or reduced mobility. You will find more on how to get there, which areas are accessible, available facilities, as well as ticketing information to help you make your visit as smooth and enjoyable as possible.
Topkapı Palace
Topkapi Palace is one of Istanbul’s most important historical sites and a key part of the city’s skyline. For about 400 years, it served as the administrative, educational, and residential center of the Ottoman Empire. Today, it allows visitors to explore the imperial life from the 15th to the 19th century and admire collections of porcelain, weapons, Ottoman miniatures, Islamic calligraphic manuscripts, and many other Ottoman treasures.

How to Get to Topkapi Palace
By Public Transport
You can reach Topkapi Palace by public transport, as the T1 tram line stops at Sultanahmet and Gülhane. Both stops are within walking/rolling distance of the palace.
- From Sultanahmet: around 700 meters
- From Gülhane: around 600 meters
Due to the historic nature of the city center, paths may include cobblestones and some gentle slopes or uneven places. If you wish to take public transport, please be prepared for large crowds, especially during peak hours.
By Car
There is no parking available directly at the palace, so if you wish to visit with your private vehicle, be prepared to look for parking spaces in the surrounding area. These spaces are limited and are usually located an approximately 10-minute walk/roll away from the palace.
By Taxi or Private Vehicle
Taxis or private vehicles can drop visitors very close to the entrance. Travelling with an assisted service or a wheelchair accessible private tour could also be a practical alternative, giving you the option of door-to-door transport, as well as dedicated assistance if desired, and the ability to travel at a pace that suits your personal mobility needs.
Is Topkapi Palace Wheelchair Accessible?
Topkapi Palace is partially wheelchair accessible. Due to its age, layout and terrain, some areas of the palace can be more difficult to navigate for some visitors using a wheelchair.

Accessibility at Topkapi Palace
Topkapi Palace consists of four courtyards connected by different impressive gates. When visiting the palace, all visitors enter through the Imperial Gate, where a security check takes place. The second entrance, known as the Gate of Salutation, gives you access to the second courtyard. This is where tickets are checked.
The First and Second Courtyard
These courtyards are the most accessible areas for wheelchair users. They feature wide pathways, ramps, and access to key highlights such as Hagia Irene Church, the Palace Kitchens, and parts of the Imperial Council. However, do expect some uneven surfaces and small thresholds at exhibition entrances.
The Third and Fourth Courtyard
Due to stairs, slopes and uneven stone paths, the Third and Fourth Courtyards can be more difficult to access. Wheelchair access is quite limited in these areas. The Harem section is largely inaccessible for wheelchair users because of its narrow corridors, steep stairs, and high thresholds. As the Harem requires a separate ticket, make sure to consider this before purchasing entry.
Facilities and Accessible Restrooms at Topkapi Palace
Topkapi Palace does not provide wheelchair rental services, so visitors are advised to bring their own wheelchair or mobility equipment when planning their visit.
Throughout the palace grounds and courtyards, benches are available for resting. In addition, staff at the palace are generally approachable and willing to assist.
Wheelchair-accessible toilets are available in the Second Courtyard and near the Konyalı Restaurant. These facilities feature wide doorways, grab bars, and space for maneuvering. The accessaloo app is another helpful option, as the app shows the location of accessible toilets alongside reviews and practical details. You can also add new toilets or share your own experiences.

Tickets and Access Rules
Topkapi Palace is closed on Tuesdays. To enter the palace grounds, you need a ticket. Separate tickets are required for special sections such as the Harem. For faster entry, visitors can use the ticket kiosks near the main ticket booths; these accept credit cards only.
Security checks take place at the Imperial Gate, and queues can be long, especially during peak hours. At the Gate of Salutation, wheelchair users can enter through an accessible gate and may receive priority access for ticket control. However, this cannot be guaranteed during particularly busy periods.

Planning Ahead
While not fully accessible, Topkapi Palace can still be enjoyed with good planning. Here are some tips to help you prepare for your visit:
- Visit early in the morning to avoid crowds and heat
- If you can, travel with a companion to help navigate cobblestone paths and thresholds
- Focus your visit on the First and Second Courtyards, which offer the most manageable access for disabled visitors
