A Brief History Overview of Keukenhof
The history of Keukenhof goes back to the 15th century. Countess Jacoba van Beieren used the land as a hunting area for the castle kitchen of Slot Teylingen, which is located about 6 km southwest of Keukenhof. In 1641, Keukenhof Castle was built on the land and later, in 1857, the landscape architects Jan David Zocher and Louis Paul Zocher redesigned the gardens in an English style. Their design still forms the basis of the park today.
One year before its opening to the public in 1950, a group of bulb growers decided to use the estate to show their spring bulbs. As a result, Keukenhof became an instant success. Today, it is a world-famous spring attraction with millions of visitors every year.
Is Keukenhof Wheelchair Accessible?
Yes, Keukenhof is very accessible for wheelchair users. The park has wide and smooth paved asphalt or tile paths that make it easy to move around. Its two entrances are step-free and have wide ticket gates. Where needed, ramps make sure you can continue your route without barriers. In addition, as you can see in the right picture below, there are signposts indicating accessible facilities.

The gardens are spacious and well maintained, and you can explore most areas in your wheelchair. Whether you use a manual wheelchair, electric wheelchair, rollator, or mobility scooter, you can comfortably enjoy the many colors of the flowers on display.

Wheelchairs and Mobility Scooters at Keukenhof
Any type of wheelchair or mobility scooter is allowed into the park. If you wish to rent a manual wheelchair, you can visit the ticket shop. Please note availability is limited. To make sure a wheelchair is available for you during your visit, it is best to reserve one in advance. Renting a manual wheelchair costs €5 for the whole duration of your visit.
Please note that electric wheelchairs are not available for rent.
Getting to Keukenhof (2026)
Keukenhof is located in Lisse, which is known as the heart of the Dutch flower region. The park is easy to reach by public transport or by car. Below, you can find the different travel options, including useful information about accessibility.
By Public Transport (KeukenhofBuzz Bus)
One option to travel is by using the KeukenhofBuzz. This bus departs from train stations in Amsterdam, Haarlem, Hoofddorp or Leiden, and takes you straight to Keukenhof.
If you use a wheelchair, you can travel on the bus as long as it fits within the European size guidelines, of which the maximum dimensions are the following:
- 120 cm long
- 70 cm wide
- 109 cm high
Please be aware that there is only space for one wheelchair per bus, and availability cannot be guaranteed. However, wheelchair users do have priority over strollers. Another good thing to know is that wheelchairs are belted during the journey.
It is possible to buy your transport tickets separately, or in combination with entrance tickets to Keukenhof. You can find more information about the KeukenhofBuzz and ticket prices on the official Keukenhof website.
By Car or By Camper
You can also reach Keukenhof by car. There are about 5,000 parking spaces available, divided into P1 and P2. At either of the parking lots you can inform staff when entering the parking area that you are a wheelchair user or have difficulty walking. They will direct you to a parking space closer to the entrance.
If you are travelling by camper (longer than 5 meters), park in parking lot P2. You will need a special camper parking ticket, and availability is limited. It is recommended to purchase your tickets in advance online. Please note that overnight stays are not allowed in the parking area, and the car park closes at 7:00 PM.

What To Do at Keukenhof
During the spring season of 2026, the park is open from 8 AM to 7 PM. Besides marvelous colors of millions of flowers, Keukenhof offers several additional activities. Additionally, they also host multiple events throughout the season, such as flower shows or the Holland Heritage Weekend.
Although most of Keukenhof is easy to explore with a wheelchair, a few attractions have limitations. Therefore, it is helpful to know in advance what is and is not accessible. This way, you can plan your visit with confidence and avoid disappointment.
The Windmill
The historic windmill is one of the park’s highlights. You can walk or roll up to the windmill area using the paved paths. The surroundings are accessible, and you can enjoy beautiful views of the nearby flower fields from ground level.
However, the inside of the mill and the viewing platform at the top are not accessible for wheelchair users or visitors with walking difficulties as you need to climb stairs to reach the top.
Even though you cannot access the platform as a wheelchair user, you can still take great photos of the mill and the flower fields from the accessible paths around it.

Whisper Boat Tour
The 45-minute electric whisper boat tour takes visitors through the flower bulb region around the park. The departure point is located behind the windmill and can be reached via accessible paths. However, there is no possibility of taking a wheelchair on board. The boats are not equipped with ramps or secure wheelchair spaces. You will need to transfer from your wheelchair to the boat seat to join this boat tour.
Please note that transferring from a wheelchair into the boat requires stepping down into the vessel. The difference in level is quite big. The same goes for transferring back to your wheelchair from the boat after the tour.
Tickets for the boat tour are sold separately and cost:
- € 11,00 for adults
- € 5,50 for children aged 4-17
- Free of charge for children aged 3 and younger
Cycling Around the Park
It is possible to rent bicycles at the parking area near the main entrance. However, cycling is only allowed around Keukenhof, and not inside the park. Additionally, please note that there are no wheelchair bikes nor hand bikes or special mobility cycles available.
Children’s Playground and Family Areas
Keukenhof is very family friendly. For children, the park offers a playground, a maze, stepping stones on the lake, an animal meadow, and a scavenger hunt. Although most paths leading to these areas are paved and accessible, there are some things to be aware of regarding the accessibility of these areas:
- Playground: the surface is sandy and can make moving through it difficult
- Maze: the pathway is generally firm, but turning space may be limited in some sections
- Stepping stones: unfortunately, these are not wheelchair accessible
