Discover some of Corsica’s most spectacular coastal and mountain landscapes on this scenic wheelchair accessible tour along the island’s west coast. From the charming seaside town of Cargèse with its unique churches to the dramatic red granite cliffs of the Calanques de Piana, this tour combines history, culture and breathtaking nature. Your tour starts at the cruise port of Ajaccio, where your personal driver guide picks you up in a private adapted vehicle.
Your first destination on this journey is the seaside town of Cargèse. This charming fishing port and marina was founded in 1774, after a small colony of Greeks arrived at the island. They built around 100 houses as well as a Greek Orthodox church. A couple of years later, due to the high number of Corsican people in the village, a second, Roman Catholic church was erected.
Today, these two churches facing each other are the well-known symbols of Cargèse. In addition to the churches, many small squares, vegetable gardens, and house gardens that are decorated with trees and flowers add to the charm of this enchanting town. Cargèse also features multiple beaches overlooking the crystal-clear waters of the turquoise seas.
After exploring Cargèse, your tour continues with a scenic drive between the sea and the mountains of the island, leading you to the UNESCO World Heritage site of Calanques de Piana. These spectacular cliffs of red granite rock going downwards into the sea, were created by age-old magmatic rock and shaped by forces of the wind and sea. The heart-shaped rock formation with its pink hue is truly a must-see during your trip to Corsica.
Continuing your trip, you will arrive at Piana Village, which is 63km north of Ajaccio. Located on a plateau at an altitude of 438 meters, this picturesque mountain village offers breathtaking views over the Gulf of Porto and the Senino and Scandola peninsulas. Thanks to its wondrous setting and timeless charm, Piana has been named one of the most beautiful villages in France.
If time allows it, your tour may continue with a stop in the alluring seaside town of Porto. Located at the end of the Gulf of Porto, this small coastal contrasts with its surrounding mountains. The gulf itself has been recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site thanks to its extraordinary landscapes and rich natural heritage.
Porto offers a range of amenities including cafés, restaurants, and small shops. The Route de la Marine, lined with eucalyptus trees, connects the different parts of the village and leads to the marina area. Here, visitors can enjoy views of the surrounding cliffs and turquoise waters while soaking up the relaxed Mediterranean atmosphere.
The next stop on your journey is an outside visit to one of Corsica’s historic Genoese towers. These impressive coastal watchtowers once played a vital role in protecting the island. Built between the 16th and early 17th centuries, they were constructed by the Republic of Genoa in response to frequent pirate attacks along Corsica’s shores.
Although more than one hundred towers once guarded Corsica’s coastline, only a portion of them remain today. However, many have been restored and continue to stand proudly along the shore, serving as reminders of the island’s turbulent past and its long-standing relationship with the sea. This brief stop offers an opportunity to admire one of these remarkable structures and learn about the important role they played in safeguarding Corsica’s coastal communities.
At the end of the tour, your driver guide brings you back to the cruise port of Ajaccio.
