Your first stop on this Accessible Tour from Ponta Delgada is the viewpoint of Pico da Barrosa. From here, you can look over Lagao do Fogo or Lake Fire. This lake is the highest crater lake that you will find on the Island. From Pico da Barrosa, you will continue to the next viewpoint called Miradouro da Lagoa do Fogo. This look-out lies closer to the volcano and the lake.
Our next stop on this Accessible Tour from Ponta Delgada is yet another natural phenomenon that we do not experience daily. Caldeira Velha is a nature reserve located on the North Slope of the Fogo Volcano. Expect a hidden forest with thick vegetation, characterized by intense green colors. Caldeira Velha is a small waterfall with warm water that runs into natural baths. The water contains a lot of natural iron, which is considered to entail several health benefits. Unfortunately, the bath itself is not accessible.
Next, it is time to head to the North of the Island, to Ribeira Grande. This old town is a popular highlight on the island. It is a lovely village built along the banks of the Ribeira Grande river. The old town’s architecture dates from the 17th and 18th centuries. Wander around the narrow streets while learning fascinating facts about its rich history. Interesting are the facades of the many churches that you will find in Ribeira Grande.
A 15-minute drive to the East brings us to the oldest and only tea estate in Europe, the Fábrica de Chá Gorreana. During your visit you will be able to see the plantations, learn about the history and production of thee.
Take a moment to relax during the 30-minute drive southward, in the direction of Lake Furnas. Here, we will stop at the famous Pico do Ferro viewpoint. It provides you with impressive views over Lake Furnas.
The last stop before heading back to Ponta Delgada is a visit to the Terra Nostra Garden. This botanical garden was built in the 18th and 19th centuries. Both locals and tourists visit the place. Some enjoy a bath in the geothermal pool, and others enjoy the variety of exotic vegetation.
