Outside visits:
Discover the history, culture, and breathtaking coastal scenery of Ajaccio, the charming capital of Corsica Island, and the birthplace of Napoleon Bonaparte. Located along the Mediterranean Sea, this vibrant port city blends imperial history, Italian-influenced architecture, and lively Corsican traditions.
This private panoramic tour offers a relaxed and accessible way to explore Ajaccio’s must-sees. With your experienced English-speaking driver guide, you will enjoy scenic drives in a private adapted vehicle, take some time for photo stops, and make outside visits to some of the city’s most famous landmarks and viewpoints.
Your tour begins directly at Ajaccio cruise port, where your driver guide welcomes you and accompanies you on a journey through the city where Napoleon spent his early years and where centuries of Corsican history come to life.
The first highlight of this tour could be considered Ajaccio’s most famous historical landmark: Maison Bonaparte, the ancestral home of the Bonaparte family. Located on Rue Saint-Charles in the heart of the Old Town, this house was owned by the Bonaparte family for over two centuries.
It was here that Napoleon Bonaparte was born on August 15, 1769. He spent his early childhood in this house before leaving to mainland France for his education. Today, the residence is a national museum dedicated to Napoleon and his family history.
Please note: An inside visit is not included in the tour. If you wish to add this, please let us know as we’re happy to look into it for you. In terms of accessibility inside, part of the first floor and the ground floor as well as the temporary exhibition are accessible.
Your journey continues to the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Assumption, also known as the Cathedral of the Assumption of Saint Mary. This Roman Catholic church in Ajaccio’s historic center was completed in 1593.
The cathedral is also significant for Napoleon’s story, as this was where he was baptized shortly after his birth. Next to the cathedral, you will find a chapel dedicated to Our Lady of the Rosary, under which the Bonapartes had their tomb.
Next on your tour, enjoy a stop at Place Foch, one of Ajaccio’s most lively and beautiful squares. Also known as Place des Palmiers, this open square was laid out in the early 19th century and connects the Old Town to what was once the old suburbs (now Rue Fesch).
Enjoy a refreshing sea breeze at this lovely gathering place where Ajaccio’s vibrant atmosphere truly comes to life. In the center of this square, you can see the striking white marble statue of Napoleon depicted as a Roman consul, surrounded by an elegant fountain guarded by four marble lions.
Passing by the impressive Palais Fesch, your driver guide will introduce you to one of France’s most important fine arts museums: the Musée Fesch.
The museum houses the extraordinary collection assembled by Cardinal Joseph Fesch, Napoleon’s maternal uncle, and a passionate art patron. At its peak, his private collection contained more than 17,000 works of art, with a special focus on Italian painting from the 14th to the 18th century.
Today, the museum still holds one of the largest collections of Italian paintings in France outside the Louvre, along with portraits of the Bonaparte family and Napoleonic memorabilia.
Please note: an inside visit is not included in the tour. Please let us know if you wish to extend the tour duration and add this to your experience. The museum is wheelchair accessible and has accessible toilets on site.
As you continue your tour, you will see the Citadel of Ajaccio, a fortress originally built by the Genoese in 1492 to defend the city from attacks by sea. Over the centuries, the citadel evolved from a defensive stronghold to military barracks. It played a role during several historic periods, including the French takeover of Corsica, the First World War, and even the Second World War.
Today, the citadel is open to the public as part of Ajaccio’s cultural heritage, connecting the city’s past with its vibrant present. Nearby, the Old Town allows you to discover enchanting streets, colorful façades, and a Mediterranean charm that reflects Corsica’s Italian and French influences.
Enjoy the stunning coastal scenery during the next part of your tour at one of the most beautiful viewpoints in the Ajaccio region. From the Parata Peninsula, you can take in spectacular views of the famous Sanguinaires Islands, an archipelago of four rocky islets at the entrance of the Gulf of Ajaccio.
This protected natural site is known for its dramatic coastal scenery, striking light, and unforgettable sunsets. A historic Genoese watchtower overlooks the peninsula, creating one of the most iconic landscapes in Corsica. This stop is a great opportunity for photos and appreciating the natural beauty that makes Corsica so unique.
If your tour takes place on a market day, your driver guide can also take you to one of Ajaccio’s lively local markets. Corsican markets are filled with authentic regional flavors and artisanal products. From fresh fruits and vegetables to cheeses, herbs, and handmade crafts, a market is a wonderful place to experience the island’s rich culinary traditions and local culture.
The dates and times of these markets depend on the season and the specific market. You can check with your driver guide whether your tour day is a market day.
At the end of your panoramic exploration, your driver guide will bring you back to the Ajaccio cruise port.
