During this tour, you will discover its rich history, ancient ruins, vibrant markets, and gorgeous panoramic views. To start off, your knowledgeable guide and private driver will meet you directly at the cruise port of Izmir, or your city center accommodation. Then, you will start your comfortable journey through Turkey’s third largest city and second-largest seaport.
Your first tour stop is the Smyrna Agora Ruins. The term ‘Agora’ comes from ancient Greek and means city square or marketplace. However, it was more than that. In ancient times, the Agora was the political, commercial, religious, and social center of the city. People met here to trade, attend court, celebrate festivals, and discuss important matters.
Originally built in the 4th century BC, the Agora was ruined by a powerful earthquake in 178 AD. Later, the Roman Emperor Marcus Aurelius had it reconstructed, leading to many Roman structures still standing today. Additionally, because the site was used as a cemetery during Byzantine and Ottoman times, the site remained well preserved.
Please note: entrance tickets to this site are not included in the tour and are to be paid on the day.
Next, your tour continues to Izmir’s downtown market, Kemeralti Bazaar, located in the Konak district. This bazaar is one of the oldest in the world, with a history of over 2,400 years.
This lively market with more than 5,000 shops offers an intriguing blend of the old and the new. You can find traditional herbalists, coppersmiths, and shoemakers, as well as modern cafés and stylish boutiques. In addition, you can taste traditional street food (not included, to be paid on the day), explore the fresh seafood and find authentic Turkish handicrafts such as ceramics, carpets, leather goods, and handmade jewelry.
After the market, your guide and driver take you to the famous Elevator (Asansör) of Izmir. Built in 1907 by Jewish businessman Nesim Levi, the tower connects two streets separated by a 50-meter cliff. You can ride this elevator for free, and its cabins offer a nostalgic feeling. At the top, you are welcomed by a wonderful panoramic view of Izmir and the Aegean Sea.
The final visit on your tour is Kadifekale Fortress. This castle was built in the 3rd century BC by Lysimachos, one of the generals of Alexander the Great. With its five towers and parts of the walls that remain today, the castle stands as a symbol of Izmir’s strength and history. In addition, the sire offers one of the best panoramic views of the Gulf of Izmir.
After a day filled with history, local culture, and beautiful views, your driver and guide bring you back to the cruise port, or your city center accommodation.
