About this accessible San Sebastian and Basque Coast Tour

Discover the Basque Coast and its cultural highlights on a private 9-hour accessible tour from San Sebastian. Visit the San Juan de Gaztelugatxe viewpoint, explore the coastal town of Bermeo with a licensed guide, and discover the history of Gernika, including the Casa de Juntas and the famous Tree of Gernika.

The tour is designed for travelers with disabilities and combines private adapted transport with accessible routes at different stops. The itinerary can be adjusted to your mobility needs and preferences, allowing you to experience the highlights at a comfortable pace.

San Juan de Gaztelugatxe

Your first stop is San Juan de Gaztelugatxe, a beautiful spot on the Basque Coast with impressive views over the sea. The small rocky island is connected to the mainland by a stone bridge, with a long staircase leading up to the historic hermitage at the top.

The hermitage is dedicated to Saint John the Baptist and has a history that goes back centuries. For generations, people have made the journey to the top as a pilgrimage, and the site is surrounded by local legends. One of the best-known traditions is to ring the bell at the hermitage three times and make a wish. The island has also played a role in the region’s maritime history, with local fishermen traditionally visiting the site before heading out to sea.

During your visit, your guide will tell you more about these stories and the history of the area while you take in the views of the island, the stone bridge and the rugged coastline.

Please note that the route to San Juan de Gaztelugatxe itself is not wheelchair accessible. It includes a steep path and a large number of steps leading to the hermitage. The accessible viewpoint offers a great alternative to experience this special part of the Basque Coast.

Bermeo

Continue to Bermeo, one of the Basque Coast’s historic fishing towns. Located directly on the Cantabrian Sea, Bermeo has a strong maritime identity and has been closely connected to fishing and seafaring for centuries. The town is particularly known for its fishing tradition, colorful harbor and tuna fishing, which remains an important part of its local culture.

Together with your licensed guide, explore the town and discover its maritime heritage, including Plaza Lamera and the harbor. The harbor is at the heart of Bermeo and offers a glimpse into the town’s long-standing relationship with the sea. As you explore, your guide can also share more about local traditions, the fishing industry and the role Bermeo has played in the history of the Basque Coast.

The route can be adapted to your mobility needs. Some cobblestones and uneven surfaces may be encountered, particularly around the historic areas, but the itinerary focuses on routes that can be comfortably navigated by wheelchair users and travelers with reduced mobility.

Gernika

The final stop is Gernika, one of the most historically significant towns in the Basque Country. The town is an important symbol of Basque identity and is particularly known for its historic Assembly House, the Casa de Juntas and the famous Tree of Gernika.

The stop focuses on the accessible outdoor areas around the Casa de Juntas and the Tree of Gernika. Casa de Juntas is where the traditional parliament of Biscay has met for centuries. Next to the Assembly House stands the Tree of Gernika, a powerful symbol of Basque traditions, identity, and political history. Your licensed guide will explain the significance of both sites and share more about the traditions and events that have shaped Gernika.

The gardens have clear paths leading to the main spaces, although some paths have dome uneven grounds.

Gernika is also internationally known because of the bombing of the town during the Spanish Civil War in 1937, an event that later inspired Pablo Picasso’s famous painting Guernica. Your guide can provide more context about the bombing and its impact on the town and its people, adding another important layer to your visit.
