On this full-day wheelchair accessible tour, you will explore many of the Scottish capital’s most iconic locations at a comfortable pace. From the historic heart of the Old Town to the elegant streets of the New Town and the coastal character of its harbor districts, this tour offers a great introduction to Edinburgh’s UNESCO World Heritage sites and surrounding landmarks. Along the way, your driver guide will share stories of the people, events, and traditions that have shaped the city, while ensuring you can experience its highlights with ease and comfort.
The first sites you explore on this tour are the famous Castlehill and its impressive Esplanade, located at the foot of Edinburgh Castle. Although the castle itself is limited in its accessibility, its surrounding areas allow you to take in its regal presence and rich royal history. From the Esplanade, you can not only admire the castle, but also gorgeous panoramas of Edinburgh’s skyline.
Continuing your journey, you drive down the Royal Mile. This street is also known as the spine of Edinburgh’s Old Town and connects the city’s castle to Holyrood Palace. Throughout the centuries, this street has received crowds during public gatherings, as well as royalty and grand processions. In this Old Town part of the city, you will see many historic buildings, showcasing Edinburgh’s medieval history.
One of the most impressive buildings, also known as the central focus of Old Town, is St Giles’ Cathedral. The Gothic cathedral’s elaborate stonework and elevated spire convey an impression of magnificence and significance.
This impressive key site in Scotland’s religious history was founded in 1124 and has been at the heart of many defining national moments such as the early tensions that led to civil war, serving as John Knox’ parish church during the Scottish Reformation, to hosting the lying-in-state of the late Queen Elizabeth II and the presentation of the Honours of Scotland to King Charles III.
Following to St Giles’ Cathedral, your tour continues past Holyrood Park, where you can spot Arthur’s seat. This ancient volcano is the park’s highest point and rules Edinburgh’s natural skyline. Although the summit is not wheelchair accessible, you can still enjoy the park’s lower roads and the breathtaking views.
Moving on, you will leave the city center to visit Duddingston Village, settled at the edge of Holyrood Park. As one of Edinburgh’s oldest neighborhoods dating back to the 1100s, this picturesque village feels quiet and peaceful. Its enchanting stone buildings make you feel like you’ve traveled back in time, immersing you in Duddingston village’s history calm atmosphere.
Next on your tour is Calton Hill. At this volcanic hill, you can take in some of Edinburgh’s most astounding views. The viewpoint is the place to be for photographers and visitors who want to enjoy panoramic views of Edinburgh.
In addition to being wheelchair accessible, the viewpoint offers an accessible toilet at the City Observatory. In case the door to the restroom is locked, you can go to the shop desk and request the key.
Your next tour stop is a UNESCO World Heritage Site famous for its Georgian symmetry, spacious streets and sophisticated architecture: Edinburgh’s New Town. This central area of Edinburgh was completed in stages between 1767 and 1850 and is important to Edinburgh’s identity as a city of Enlightenment.
After exploring the New Town, you will continue towards the coast to the historic waterfront districts of Leith and Newhaven. These picturesque areas were once Edinburgh’s key harbors for trade and shipbuilding. Nowadays, you can experience the districts’ fusion of maritime history and modern culture, making them a must-do when visiting Edinburgh.
Afterwards, your driver guide brings you to Circus Lane, a charming, residential lane known for its aesthetically pleasing terraced houses decorated with flowers and ivy. This street, often described as one of the most beautiful in the world, is the perfect place to take some great pictures.
Last but not least on your tour is Dean Village. This riverside region, along the Water of Leith, has a relaxed and peaceful atmosphere. Enjoy some fresh air and take some more pictures at this memorable part of Edinburgh to conclude your full day of exploration.
Finally, your driver guide will drive you back to your cruise port or your city center accommodation.
