During this wheelchair accessible tour in Edinburgh, you travel through the charming and historic capital city of Scotland. Discover the city’s gorgeous views and most famous highlights such as Castlehill, The Royal Mile, New Town, and many more.
To start off the tour, your personal local driver-guide meets you at the cruise port or your accommodation in the city center. Enter your private, adapted vehicle and set off to explore the most popular and stunning parts of Edinburgh.
The first highlight on this tour is Castlehill, a short road that connects Castle Esplanade and the Tolbooth Kirk. On this charming gothic road, you can get completely immersed in the city’s medieval past. While you take in the stunning views, your driver-guide will share stories of Edinburgh’s rich history.
From Castlehill, you continue to Castle Esplanade, a spacious square just outside the castle walls. Here, you can not only see Edinburgh Castle, but also memorials, plaques and statues in honor of the regimes and Scottish heroes of the past. Each year in August, performers bring Castle Esplanade to life during the Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo, an event full of spectacular performances.
Accessibility note: the path at Castle Esplanade is a combination of stone and asphalt. Although there are some uneven areas and changes in level, it is generally smooth and rollable.
From the Castle, you continue your journey to The Royal Mile, which runs through the heart of Edinburgh’s Old Town. This famous historic street connects Edinburgh Castle to Holyrood Palace and has and has welcomed kings, queens, and grand processions for centuries. Along this road of 1.81 km, which is approximately one Scots mile, you can find many historic buildings, such as St Giles’ Cathedral and John Knox House.
The next highlight on the tour is Calton Hill. Because of this volcanic hill and the many monuments located on it, Edinburgh earned the nickname “Athens of the North”. From Calton Hill, you have breathtaking panoramic views of the city’s skyline. This viewpoint has designated wheelchair accessible viewing areas, so you can enjoy the scenery to the fullest.
Calton Hill is also home to the City Observatory, which offers a wheelchair accessible toilet. You can ask a staff member at the shop desk for the key.
After admiring Edinburgh’s history and gorgeous skyline, your driver-guide takes you to the city’s New Town. At this location, recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage site, you can enjoy Gregorian architecture and neoclassical design. Wide, flat pavements make this area particularly suited for accessible exploration.
Your final stop on this wheelchair accessible tour is Dean Village. Located along the Water of Leith, this riverside region is one of Edinburgh’s hidden gems. Its tranquil setting and unique charm make this beauty spot the perfect place for taking pictures and enjoying the calm atmosphere.
At the end of your tour, your driver guide takes you back to the cruise port or your city center accommodation.
