At the end of the day, your driver-guide will take you back to Naples and drop you off at the cruise port or your accommodation.
After about half an hour’s drive, you will arrive at the fascinating archaeological site of Herculaneum, where your private, licensed guide will accompany you on a three-hour exploration of this remarkably well-preserved ancient city. Much like Pompeii, Herculaneum was destroyed by the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 AD, but unlike Pompeii, it was buried under a deep layer of volcanic mud that protected its buildings, mosaics, and even wooden structures from decay.
Originally a small fishing town with around 5,000 inhabitants, Herculaneum is roughly ten times smaller than Pompeii. Its compact size makes it easier to explore and provides a more peaceful and personal experience. You will begin your visit at the designated accessible viewing point, which offers panoramic views of the site and its surroundings—an ideal place to appreciate the scale and layout of the ancient city. From there, a wide, gently sloping ramp will lead you down to the flatter areas of the site, where the accessible tour route begins.
Together with your private guide, you will discover Herculaneum’s well-preserved homes, public baths, and intricate mosaics, following paths that are easy to navigate. Along the way, your guide will share fascinating insights into the city’s history, culture, and daily life before the eruption.
The main streets of Herculaneum are mostly smooth. There are several metal bridges installed that connect the old sidewalks.
There is an accessible wheelchair route marked in Blue on the map. An accessible toilet can be found inside the site.
