Escape to the Garden of Ireland, leave the bustle of Dublin behind and journey into the heart of County Wicklow — often called The Garden of Ireland — on this full-day wheelchair accessible tour. Wicklow is known for its dramatic mountain passes, peaceful lakes, historic landmarks, and welcoming villages. This tour offers all of that in one unforgettable day, carefully adapted for travelers with mobility needs.
Your adventure begins with a scenic drive to Russborough House, a magnificent Palladian-style mansion dating back to the 18th century. Known for its classical architecture and sweeping views of the Wicklow countryside, from its richly decorated rooms.
A self-visit can be included. Entrance tickets required, not included. Please note: while the upper bedroom floor is not wheelchair accessible, the ground level, garden, and surrounding areas are.
Outside, wheelchair users can enjoy the landscaped gardens, explore paved paths, or even watch a falconry demonstration — all in an accessible and inclusive environment.
From Russborough, you travel through the picturesque village of Hollywood, a charming stop with deep-rooted Irish heritage. As the road climbs into the Wicklow Mountains, your driver traverses the dramatic Wicklow Gap, one of Ireland’s most scenic mountain passes.
Here you make a stop for photographs and fresh air. There is a gravel car park and a wooden walkway leading to a panoramic viewing platform. While the walkway is a bit of a push uphill, it is generally manageable for manual wheelchair users and absolutely worth it on a dry day.
Next is Glendalough, the 6th-century monastic site nestled between two tranquil lakes. The site is one of Ireland’s most important early Christian landmarks and is incredibly atmospheric, with its round tower, ancient church ruins, and forest surroundings.
There are wheelchair-accessible paths that allow you to take in much of the natural beauty and history. Whether you’re here for the spiritual ambiance or the scenic landscape, Glendalough is a tour highlight not to be missed.
Your return journey takes the scenic route through Laragh, followed by the wild and open moorlands of Sally Gap via the historic Military Road. This drive showcases the more rugged side of Wicklow, with sweeping views, remote cottages, and possible sightings of waterfalls cascading down the hillsides, the roads over the sally gap are narrow and can be bumpy.
The stark beauty of this landscape contrasts beautifully with the structured elegance of Russborough House, creating a well-rounded experience.
Depending on time, group preference, and energy levels, the tour may continue into Glenmalure Valley, a hidden gem in the Wicklow Mountains. Tucked into this peaceful valley is the Glenmalure Inn, a traditional Irish pub perfect for lunch or a drink. It is a charming and authentic experience. The kind you remember long after the trip ends.
The entrance to the Glenmalure Inn is accessible, although the interior is a bit narrow due to its rustic, country pub design.
If time allows, you can include a visit to Beyond the Trees Avondale — a fully wheelchair-accessible treetop walk offering elevated views of the surrounding forest. This unique attraction provides a rare opportunity for wheelchair users to experience nature from above, via smooth ramps that rise gradually into the canopy. There is also a visitor center, accessible restrooms, and a café on site.
