About Alta

Experience Alta, the city of Northern Lights. Surprisingly for a city situated so far up north in Finnmark, the northernmost county in Norway, Alta is a very modern city and the largest city in the county. Alta’s history covers the period ranging between 7,000-year-old rock carvings at the Alta Museum and the Sami rights court case during the 1980s. The countryside around Alta is diverse and includes the largest canyon in Northern Europe and the vast tundra on the Finnmark Mountain Plateau.
