The Art Nouveau town of Ålesund

This accessible rolling tour of Ålesund is a perfect match if you are interested in history, good views, picturesque harbors, and beautiful architecture. With this guided tour, you hear detailed stories about the town of Ålesund. During your (st)roll, you will see the beautiful Art Nouveau-style architecture and hear about the town’s vibrant history. The highlights of this tour are the beautiful pedestrian street, the picturesque Brosundet square, and of course, all the Art Nouveau buildings.

An enormous fire

There is actually a reason why the town has so many Art Nouveau buildings. In 1904, an enormous fire raged through Ålesund. Almost 850 houses burned to the ground quickly, leaving thousands of people homeless. Help came from all over the world, and in a couple of years, they rebuilt the town. As there was a great economic depression in Norway, many artisans and architects hurried to Ålesund, hoping to get a construction job. They decorated the buildings with towers, turrets, and artistic and colorful ornaments. That is why Ålesund is internationally famous for its architecture and a member of the “Rèseau Art Nouveau Network,” a European network of Art Nouveau cities.

Nowadays, you find various shops, galleries, restaurants, and accommodations in Art Nouveau buildings. At the end of the tour, you can take a stroll along the picturesque fishing harbor of Brosundet. There, you see many sea houses that were initially used to receive and prepare fish.

The educational tour ends in the city center or the cruise port where you say goodbye to your guide.
