Poland is a country in Eastern Europe where there is a lot to see and do. In Poland are many old cities, vibrant modern cities, incredible nature, and beautiful sights.
The Auschwitz concentration camp is probably the absolute number one when it comes to sights in Poland. It is not a cheerful attraction, but worth it. This is very easy to reach from Cracow. In Krakow, the historic old town of this city is also definitely worth a visit.
Another fantastic city to visit is Warsaw. It is the capital of Poland and a truly unique city, located in the center of Europe at the crossroads of trade routes from West to East and from North to South. It is a city full of contrasts, where you will find historical monuments in addition to contemporary architecture. In Warsaw, eastern and western influences meet, and the future and traditions go hand in hand.
About Poland
Poland is generally a flat country. Mountains only occur at the southern border. The coastal plains are situated along the Baltic Sea and the lowest point in the Vistula is the lowest point in the country. Several high plateaus are situated south of the central plains.
Poland is located in a transitional area between the maritime climate of Western Europe and the continental climate of Eastern Europe. The climate is therefore changeable and varies greatly per region. In the west and the north of Poland, a moderate maritime climate prevails due to the influence of Atlantic currents. In the east and south, you find a continental climate, with cold winters and warm summers.
The official language of Poland is Polish. Many older people speak a little Russian besides Polish because of the great influence during the cold war. In the big cities, a part of the population now speaks quite a bit of English, especially the young people. Outside the big cities, few Poles speak English, you can better survive there with German.
The currency in Poland is the zloty (PLN). The zloty is divided into 100 groszy and is issued in coins of 1, 2, 5, 10, 20 and 50 groszy and 1, 2 and 5 zloty and notes of 10, 20, 50, 100, 200 and 500 zloty. You can also easily pay with a debit or credit card. This is not a problem, especially in large cities or tourist areas. In general, it is customary to tip from five to ten percent in restaurants.
